Reader’s note: As technology rapidly advanced, and (beginning in the early 1990s) the available labor pool materially increased (due to global practices of offshoring of jobs, outsourcing of work, and in-sourcing of foreign labor); the combination resulted in organizations standardizing technical human resource hiring around specialization for job roles. The earlier era of the general computing expert faded and the new era of the specialized job role has become standard.
For that reason, do not expect to see diverse wallets of technical certifications across multiple vendors held by a single individual in today’s job market anymore. Do expect to see workers specializing in one or two specific areas, with their technical certifications reflecting that. That is what human resources hires for presently and entry-level job applicants should take note.
